Mar 1    The Rocks and Soils Remember
UWRF geologist Bill Cordua talks about the fascinating history of southwest Wisconsin's Driftless Area, where half-million-year-old mountain tops mix with a topography untouched by the most recent glacier to scour Wisconsin 100,000 years ago. This is the area of Wisconsin where our River Falls Reads author, Ben Logan grew up on a small family farm. In his book, Ben painted a vibrant picture of the land and its people. Bill will give us background on how this unique region came to be. This beautiful part of our state would make a great vacation destination and now you can know more about its geological history. Bill is a popular speaker at the library and his lectures are always fascinating

Mar 4    Donald Worster- Wilderness: The Higher Altruism in American Environmental Values
Walker D. and Helen Bryant Wyman Visiting Professorship in History Presents:
Donald Worster, Hall Distinguished Professor of U.S. Environmental History, University of Kansas
Wilderness: The Higher Altruism in American Environmental Values
Using the Wilderness Act of 1964, Worster reflects on the nature of conservation in the U.S. and the globe. The consensus in American culture suggested in the act seems shattered by recent increasing ideological and moral differences. Explaining why the consensus has ended, he argues that the desire to save the wilderness remains. Growing out of a much older trend of pure utilitarianism toward nature is an evolving spirit of altruism in American environmental values.

Mar 4 - Mar 7    UW-River Falls Dance Theatre to Present Annual Spring Concert
The University of Wisconsin-River Falls Dance Theatre will present its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. March 4-7 in the Blanch Davis Theatre in the Kleinpell Fine Arts building.

The concert features the work of numerous UWRF Dance Theatre alumni, current students, faculty, and professionals. The evening will consist of diverse dance forms from classical Chinese, swing, contemporary, modern, jazz, and hip hop fusion.

This year’s guest artist, Tricia Wood, has created a fun and uplifting swing dance featuring East Coast Swing. Wood’s many years of experience competing in ballroom competitions helped create a mix of precision with exciting, exuberant steps.

Dance Theatre alumna Haiya Zhang has restaged a classical Chinese dance, previously premiered in 2008, in conjunction with the university’s “Year of China" theme, for this year's concert.  Zhang’s "A Lovely Folk Song" whirls brightly colored Chinese parasols with enchanting grace and visual spectacle. Ricardo Suarez has constructed a comical number, "The Waiting Room," that takes the mundane waiting room experience to new quirky heights.

UWRF Dance Theatre Director Mari Kline-Kluck’s "Bereavement" explores the stages of grief from different perspectives as it features the vocal expertise of Jenna Cook accompanied by the brilliant piano of Sor Her. Kline-Kluck also choreographed a full company piece, "Shadows," beginning with eerie ambient accompaniment that quickly transitions into a boisterous fusion of contemporary hip hop dance.

The piece "Humans," choreographed by Rana Kuebker, explores human relationships and interactions. Kuebker challenges existing notions while encouraging supportive contact. UWRF student Marcus Dryer has created an hilarious satire which uses a remix of a familiar soundscape from Star Wars for his virtuosic, yet comical take on some very recognizable characters.

UWRF Dance Theatre, a modern dance company, has brought an artistic dance program to students who love to dance for more than 30 years. It strives to provide rich dance experiences and performances to River Falls and the surrounding communities and is appropriate for all ages and backgrounds.

Admission is $10/adults, $8/seniors (60+), and $5/students and children. Tickets can be purchased at the University Theatre Box Office in the Kleinpell Fine Arts building Monday-Friday from 1-5 p.m. or by phone at 715-425-3114 beginning Feb. 23. On performance days, the Box Office opens at 3 p.m. for ticket purchases.

For more information about the concert, email Kline-Kluck at mari.kline@uwrf.edu or call 715-425-0743.

Mar 6    Donald Worster- Shrinking the Earth: From an Age of Abundance to an Age of Limits
Walker D. and Helen Bryant Wyman Visiting Professorship in History Presents:
Donald Worster, Hall Distinguished Professor of U.S. Environmental History, University of Kansas
Shrinking the Earth: From an Age of Abundance to an Age of Limits
Through maps and photographs, Worster demonstrates how our perspectives on the earth and our understanding of human beings have changed dramatically over the past 500 years. For centuries sweeping from the West throughout the world was a common view that we live in a world of abundance which must be conquered and used. Now with all nations facing limits to resources and ecology we are forced to question, revisit, and ultimately revise the old paradigm.

ESSENTIAL OILS & YOU
6:30 PM ON WEDNESDAYS AT THE YOUNG LIVING STORE WITHIN THE RIVERWALK SQUARE ON THE CORNER OF MAIN & MAPLE STREETS IN DOWNTOWN RIVER FALLS

The human body needs oxygen, antioxidants and frequency, and we are able to get all of these from plant substances known as essentail oils.  In fact, the highest level of oxygenating molecules of any substance known to man are essential oils!  Whats more, because essential oils have a frequency that is harmonic with our human bodies, we can increase our frequency by using essential oils.  We are also able to get antioxidants from essential oils.  Antioxidants create an unfriendly environment for free radicals.  They can help prevent mutations, fungus, and oxidation of the cells.  Antioxidants also help to oxygenate the cells.
Essential oils enable your body to heal itself naturally.
It is our desire to educate and empower others to walk out a lifestye of wellness, purpose and abundance.  It always puts a spring in our step to share Young Living.  We hope you are able to attend this class, and/or stop by our Optimal Health Young Living Store in the Riverwalk Square.

Mar 26    Business Breakfast - Generational Differences in the Workplace

“Generational differences in the workplace”.  We have all heard this statement or some variation of it during our lifetime, but why has it become such a lightning rod for conversation as of late?  A shift in our labor force has begun and it will continue over the next 10-15 years at a rate the U.S economy has not witnessed before.  It is a simple numbers game, the U.S. economy has more workers exiting than entering the labor force and we will continue to see this shift into the foreseeable future.  Understanding the current and incoming generations that make up our workforce is essential to attracting and retaining your talent of the future.  This presentation will explore the benefits and challenges of the future workforce and what you can do as an employer and community member to ensure the future is a bright one for the River Falls economy.

Mar 27 - Mar 28    Relay For Life
The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life is a life-changing event that brings many people to:
  • Celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer.
  • Inspire others to continue to fight.
  • Remember loved ones lost to this disease.
  • Put an end to the disease by fighting back.
Teams of people camp out at the River Falls High School and take turns walking or running around the track. Each team is asked to set a fundraising goal and have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event.

There are certain traditions at all Relays, which help participants celebrate, remember, and fight back. To celebrate, The Survivors Lap the survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories achieved over cancer. To remember, The Luminaria Ceremony is held after dark and candles are lit inside bags filled with sand. Each bag holds the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants walk a lap in silence. To fight back, the Fight Back Ceremony makes a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer.
